PLAYA GASOLINA, ISLOTE BARRIO, ARECIBO, PUERTO RICO OCTOBER 19, 2024

The beach directly adjacent to “Birth of the New World,” the Columbus statue outside of Arecibo, Puerto Rico (Islote Barrio), is also known for the former Gasolina Beach Club, which opened in 2009 and became a well-known local hub for music and weekend gatherings before being severely damaged by Hurricane María in 2017.

Current Status: The original club closed following severe damage from Hurricane María in September 2017. The site is no longer operating as an active venue, though the beach area remains known locally.

The land where the statue was erected, as well as the coastal strip where the ruins of Gasolina Beach Club sit, belongs to José González Freyre, the owner of Pan-American Grain and the manufacturer of the popular Gasolina Urban Blends pouch cocktails.
- The Vision: When González Freyre acquired the 350-foot bronze statue, his broader plan was to develop a massive tourist and eco-adventure complex around it called TerraVista Park.
- The Role of the Club: The active beachfront area—anchored by Gasolina Beach Club—was intended to tie directly into this development, effectively serving as the coastal gateway and welcoming point for tourists visiting the monument.
- The Current Reality: Following the devastation of Hurricane María in 2017, the beach club was destroyed. Development around the surrounding TerraVista theme park completely stalled, leaving the statue isolated, closed to the general public, and viewed mostly from nearby roads or the ruins of the beach club.
